Highlights from the 60th Annual Paving Conference
The 60th Annual Paving Conference commenced on Wednesday, March 13 at Martin’s West amidst the pleasant embrace of early spring weather, a promising prelude to optimal paving conditions for the upcoming season. The morning unfolded with bustling activity as Vendors, eager to showcase their offerings, arrived before daybreak to set up their tables. Attendees queued up for registration, anticipating the day of education and networking ahead, retrieving their name badges along with a commemorative hat.
Opening Session
The opening session commenced with updates from FHWA, insights from the Maryland Women of Asphalt, and a comprehensive review of Pavement Physics & Economic Realities presented by the esteemed Dr. Buzz Powell, a longstanding figure at the Paving Conference. The session culminated in a heartfelt moment as the Maryland Asphalt Association surprised recently retired President Marshall Klinefelter with the prestigious Maryland Asphalt Hall of Fame award.
Breakout Sessions
After a brief intermission, attendees immersed themselves in a series of informative breakout sessions. Topics ranged from addressing the FHWA Climate Challenge and Balanced Mix Design to discussions on e-Ticketing, Identifying & Eliminating Segregation at the Paver, and the innovative Void Reducing Asphalt Member (VRAM) technology.
Lunch, Learning, and Looking Ahead
During the leisurely lunch break, attendees relished the opportunity to network and savor a delectable meal before reconvening for further breakout sessions. These sessions delved into pressing topics such as AI in Horizontal Construction, Cold Central Plant Recycling, the Lt. Governor’s Work Zone Safety Program, and NAPA’s Climate Program, The Road Forward.
Honoring Excellence and Celebrating 60 Years of Tradition
As tradition dictates, the pinnacle of the conference was the presentation of the 2023 Excellence in Paving Awards, celebrating outstanding achievements in paving best practices. Congratulations were extended to the deserving winners for their exemplary work.
