Record-Breaking Attendance at the 59th Annual Paving Conference
The 59th Annual Paving Conference took place on Wednesday, March 8, 2023. This year we smashed our previous attendee records with over 500 attendees, all coming together to get the latest in asphalt innovations and best practices.
We started the day with updates from the National Women of Asphalt with Amy Miller of NAPA and the Asphalt Pavement Alliance, and the Maryland Women of Asphalt Branch with Chairwoman Stefani Martella, followed by a review of Maryland’s Perpetual Pavement with Amy Miller. Brandon Buckner of the Maryland Division of FHWA then gave updates on FHWA funding opportunities.
Breakout Sessions on Asphalt Innovations
Attendees separated for breakouts following a break, where they heard from Dr. Buzz Powell (National Center for Asphalt about Balanced Mix Design, and then Greg Renegar (Astec, Inc.) and Steve Haughton (Cargill Asphalt Solutions) about green materials and equipment. In the other room, Todd Mansell of Caterpillar USA gave two technical sessions on paving equipment innovations and then takeoff best practices.
Keynote Address and Closing Insights
After Martin’s famous savory buffet lunch, our Keynote speaker, Aaron Witt (BuildWitt) gave his perspective as a self-professed “Dirt Nerd” about how companies can attract and retain younger talent to the road construction industry. Then MDOT SHA Administrator Tim Smith and SHA Director of the Office of Climate Change Resilience and Adaptation Sandy Hertz. Buzz Powell rounded out the day’s education with innovations in Asphalt Pavement from the NCAT test track.
Celebrating Excellence and Looking Ahead
We finished the day with our salute to best practices in asphalt pavement with the 2022 Excellence in Paving Awards, wherein recognized excellent asphalt pavement projects completed last year. Stay tuned to the Paving Awards page for more on each paving job in the coming weeks.
