Highlights from the 61st Annual Paving Conference
The 61st Annual Paving Conference, held on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at Martin’s West in Baltimore, brought together over 500 industry professionals for a day of education, networking, and recognition. Hosted by the Maryland Asphalt Association (MAA) and the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA), the event featured informative sessions on the latest advancements in paving technologies and best practices.
Attendees started the day with an expanded continental breakfast before diving into insightful presentations, such as updates from nearby states including Pennsylvania’s progress on Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) implementation and Viriginia’s experience with tack coat, as well innovations in zero-emission flexible pavement. A highlight of the event was the keynote address by Rick Dempsey, former Baltimore Orioles catcher and 1983 World Series MVP, who shared inspiring stories from his career.
Afternoon breakout sessions covered key industry topics, including Balanced Mix Design benchmarking, Maryland SHA updates, Women of Asphalt initiatives, sustainable plant operations; and quality laydown operations. The conference concluded with the 2024 Maryland Excellence in Paving Awards, honoring outstanding achievements in asphalt paving.
The event proved to be a valuable experience for all participants, reinforcing industry collaboration and innovation before the spring paving season kicks off.
